Many research show that regular physical activity can contribute to various positive changes and improved functional ability, in both older and younger people, as it helps preserve their physical mobility in middle but also in very old age. According to Elly Kleinman, Americare Companies founder, each person, regardless of the age, is capable of some type of physical activity. Age isn’t a limiting factor for exercise.

But before joining any exercise program, older people are advised to consult with their family physicians, and even perform a medical examination. With older people it is extremely important to do an electrocardiography test, both resting and exercising (ECG) and X-ray of the heart and the lungs. In terms of laboratory checkups, Elly Kleinman says it is important that they complete blood count, urinalysis, blood glucose, creatinine and serum cholesterol. Throughout the process of doing some physical activity program, it is essential that the for elderly periodically repeat those tests, primarily to control the health condition and determine the functional capacity, and in addition to provide greater motivation for older people to keep exercising, get encouraged by the results of the tests, and realize the benefits of regular exercise.

If during exercise, an older person comes to deal with any health problems such as chest pain, shortness of breath, feeling of weakness, or other symptoms, he should immediately stop exercising and consult with his family doctor. In old age, physical activity should be programmed, guided and supervised by trained professionals of physical education, because as Kleinman explains there is a need for supervising and dosing the duration and intensity of the exercise, due to the specific state of health and functional capacity of the elderly. Physical activity should be continuous, meaning it should be performed at least 2-3 times a week or even more preferably every day, and the corresponding duration of at least 15 minutes to 30 minutes with the control of a specialized physician. In addition to all this, exercising has other benefits like keeping you mentally healthy and socially engaged with others.
